Notes for Ch 5 and Ch 6
Non Living Cycles
It is important that we understand the different elements required to sustain life and how they behave and interact on our planet. Because Earth is finite resources must be re-used time and again or we would have run out many millions of years ago.
We know from watching hot air balloons that warm air rises but you also need to understand that as one rises in altitude the average temperature of the atmosphere drops; this is an important factor in understanding Earth's climates and weather patterns.
The Rain Shadow demonstrates the properties of wind and the water cycle as affected by temperatures at different altitudes.
The Earths tilt and the spherical shape of our planet have strong effects on the climate zones we are accustomed to. Use this simulation to get a better grasp on how those factors are related.
Most comprehensive site on cycles.
Many of the Earths resources are limited and therefore must be used again and again. Understanding those cycles is an important part of understanding the interconnectedness of everything on the planet.

Habitat
People sometimes forget the importance of natural habitat. In seeking out our Southern Homes and Gardens style landscaping we forget that the animals native to our area are and have been dependent on a balance of certain species for millennia. PBS investigates the impact of individuals planting more native plants in their gardens here.
As we continue through the Anthropocene era the side effects of our lifestyles are beginning to show. Go to NOVA to learn about the acidification of our oceans.

Symbiosis
No man is an island, nor is any other organism. The deeper you delve the more interconnected we all are.
Symbiotic organisms are those that have a particularly close relationship; but not all relationships are good. There are three types: Mutualism, Commensalism, and Parasitism.
David Attenborough's Trials of life living together.

Invasive Species
As humans have increased our rate of travel we have also sped up both the accidental and purposeful exchange of species. Some end up taking over their new habitat free from their natural predators or other limiting factors. So how does that affect the native populations?
Bullfrog investigation.
The Simpsons always provides the bestest and mostest accurate information. Here's a lesson from Bart.
This TED Talk provides an overview of a few examples.
Now research some invasive species in Mississippi. Are there any on that list that you're familiar with? Did you know they weren't native species? What kind of damages do they cause? What strategies can we use to deal with them effectively?

The CDC is a government body that helps to keep the American public safe. Think of some of the diseases you have heard of; has the CDC been involved in other cases?
Ch 16 Pollution
Our use of energy in our daily lives has been one of the most powerful factors in altering the landscape and environment of our planet. The daily tech that we have come to depend on all runs on electricity that must come from powerplants. Currently most of America's power comes from the burning of fossil fuels and there are consequences. PBS NOVA.
Climate Change
Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth: TED talk, CO2 clip, Ocean Currents,
Bill Nye- Smithsonian explanation, 4o min's on climate change,
From National Geographic- how Six degrees could change the world.
The Keeling curve from Climate Central.
Of course possible solutions involve using alternative/ renewable energy sources like, fish scales , fuel cells, electric bikes, electric cars,

Part of the problems we face in our environment stem from our growing population. In discussing resources, re-newability, and waste we cannot overlook our sheer numbers. Human overpopulation has many far reaching effects some of which can be learned here. With large populations there are always those who lack and those who control the resources; learn about the modern day slaves that our lifestyle of cheap clothes and affordable technology continue to staff in the shadows of our society.
Biomagnification
Biomagnification is the accumulation and multiplication of chemicals in species moving up the food chain. Of course we like to think of ourselves as being at the top of the food chain so we may be the biggest recipient of this toxic stew.
National Geographic discusses male fish that produce eggs. More at Chesapeake Bay.
Live Science discusses the most toxic killer whale yet tested.
American Rivers are contaminated; the world's rivers are contaminated; how does that affect us?
Do you need to be BPA free?
