Evolution
PPT Notes for 15 16
How old is the Earth? Part of what makes evolution difficult to understand is the very large amounts of time involved in evolving. Take a look at some of these time lines of Earth's history to get a better grasp of deep time.

Scientists use extensive fossil evidence to piece together the puzzle of life's evolution on Earth. Bones of ancient and extinct species show the many changes that life has undergone through the epochs of time. Glimpses into those times past are preserved in layers of sediment that have accumulated and turned to rock.
Other lines of evidence include Embryology, Vestigial structures, and Biogeography.
One of the points of contention about evolution involve the gaps between ancient fossil species and more modern ones. Well those gaps are being filled. Watch this informative video about tetrapods. Here is one piece of evidence.
A multi-part series on NOVA examines the evolution of humans here.
Evolution is a waiting game of chance. Genetic variety and mutations create slightly modified versions of a species; if they're lucky it makes them more adaptable to new environments where they can thrive or to a changing environment that weakens the rest of their species. If they live long enough to reproduce then they were naturally selected to pass on their genes. If they continue to survive and the differences become extreme enough they may eventually become an entirely new species. Just wait a billion years and see what happens.

Darwin is known for his finches. Why don't you take a swing at sorting out the differences among them. Then watch this video about their development and differentiation.
Take some time and familiarize yourself with the different patterns of evolution.
